Guided visit to five legendary stadiums: San Mamés, Lasesarre, Las Llanas, La Florida and San Jorge
Discover the Campa de los Ingleses, the first football ground in Bilbao.
Spanish and English–speaking local football expert.
Experience designed around Bilbao’s metro and tram network.
We’ll meet at the Athletic Club store on Mazarredo Avenue, right in the heart of Bilbao. A perfect starting point to get to know each other, set the scene, and begin our journey into the city’s football soul.
Can you imagine a football ground where the Guggenheim now stands? This is where it all began. Discover the story of the Campa de los Ingleses, where British workers introduced football to Bilbao and the city took its very first steps into the game.
San Mamés is more than a stadium — it’s a symbol. Here we’ll talk about the old and the new San Mamés, legendary matches, unique traditions, and why this ground represents the heart and identity of Bilbao.
Modern-day Lasesarre is home to a club with a long and proud tradition: Barakaldo FC. Backed by Altos Hornos de Vizcaya, the club enjoyed a golden era from the 1940s through to the 1960s, coming within touching distance of promotion to the top flight in 1954.
In Sestao, industry and football are deeply intertwined in the history of Sestao Sport Club, who came close to reaching the top flight in 1987. The club eventually disappeared in 1996, but was succeeded by a new side with a rather curious name: Sestao River Club.
Portugalete was one of the pioneers of football in the area in the late 19th century, and that early enthusiasm has lived on through generations of resilient 'jarrilleros' supporters, who have watched numerous clubs and stadiums disappear over the years.
Our final stop takes us to San Jorge to discover CD Santurtzi, a modest local club that succeeded SD Sparta Club, which, during its brief existence in the 1920s, even fielded a women's team.
We return to San Mamés to close the circle. With the journey complete, this final stop brings together everything we’ve seen — from football’s arrival in Bilbao to the living legacy that still defines the city today.
