What we will do in this experience

This is more than a game. It’s a cultural ritual, guided by someone who knows every chant, every backstreet bar, and every heartbeat of this football-mad neighborhood. We’ll kick things off in central Athens, hopping on the train to Agia Sophia Stadium, just like thousands of AEK supporters on game day. The ride itself is part of the experience — filled with color, anticipation, and fans heading toward their football sanctuary. Once we arrive, the choice is yours: ease into the atmosphere at a nostalgic local café-bar packed with AEK memorabilia, or head straight into the buzz with a beer in hand at one of the bars outside the stadium, where the singing has already begun and flags wave proudly in the wind.

As we explore the neighborhood, I’ll share the rich history of AEK — a club born from displacement, resilience, and community — and give you a sense of what it truly means to support this team. Then, it’s time for the main event. We’ll take our seats in the upper tier, where you’ll enjoy a panoramic view of the pitch and soak up the energy of the ultras below — close enough to feel the passion, with space to take it all in.

Inside, it’s electric: over 32,000 fans, every match close to soldout, the chants echoing through the new stadium like thunder. Yellow and black pride fills the stands, and for 90 minutes, you’ll be part of something much bigger than just a football match.

After the final whistle, we won’t just go home — we’ll do what locals do. We’ll head to a favorite nearby spot for souvlaki, gyros, and cold beers, reliving every moment of the match, swapping thoughts on players and tactics, and soaking up the post-match vibe with fellow fans.

Whether you’re a seasoned football traveler or just curious to experience the heartbeat of Athens on matchday, this is a deep, authentic, and unforgettable way to live it — the AEK way!

Decided to spice up my holiday in Greece with a football game and what better option than the fierce derby AEK - Olympiacos in the last day of the season. I booked it in advance, but that happened to be the crowing celebration of the new champions AEK. George came at the meeting point, which was easy to find, with his scooter and we both went to the hotel where the players were staying before the game. With couple of hours to go, fans in yellow started to gather in numbers and soon a loud and colorful parade of motorcycles was following the players bus on their way to the stadium. After a brief walk around the impressive stadium, we headed to our seats, where we joined George`s friends and family. The atmosphere was phenomenal, more similar to the ones in South America than Europe, songs, flags, flares etc., every single one of 32000 was committed to it. After the match finished, a stage was build on the pitch and one by one all players received their medals. The trophy was lifted and the fireworks were spectacular. It was time to go and George gave me a lift with his scooter to my hotel. I cannot thank enough George, who was an amazing host and gave me one of the most memorable experiences in my life. AEK ole!!

We’ve followed AEK Athens for years, but never thought we’d make it to Greece to see them. When we landed we realised the real barrier was the ticketing system. Thankfully, George organised the tickets (for the match and the travel) and still managed to get us in when our phone apps failed. I (Seraphina) photograph and write about graffiti/street art/street stickers. George guided us through areas for the best shots and explained the history and founding of the club as we walked. The lesson continued over beer as George talked us through photos of significant players and moments in the development of the club. The carnival atmosphere was a hell of a contrast to the matchday experience at home. We loved the singing/chanting (which George explained too), there was plenty of action on the pitch and AEK won. So all in all, a perfect day! We’d looked forward to grabbing a bite to eat after the match, but we didn’t have the energy after the excitement - which continued on the train ride home. We whole-heartedly recommend the AEK + George matchday experience. Thanks George!

Great trip to see AEK Athens in a European match. George was a brilliant host, met us near our hotel and took us to the match on the metro and gave us a really good tour of the area and the history of the club and stadium, he even brought historical photos along to show us over a pre match beer! It took away all the stress of the arrangements/logistics and made it a really fun experience all round, would definitely recommend going to a game in Athens and George as a host
